The 80 percent high-strength steel frame is also lighter. Among those materials are seven different grades of high-strength steel in the cab, and aluminum for the hood, doors and tailgate.
Finally, in an effort to capitalize on the burgeoning luxury pickup segment, Chevy's two "High Feature" variants are the Silverado 1500 LTZ and Silverado 1500 High Country, which up the ante in terms of chrome accents.
The all-new Silverado, which will be offered in eight configurations, was shown in the new LT Trailboss trim which includes a 2-inch suspension lift and aggressive Goodyear Wrangler 265/65R18 tires.
Along with sharper lines and shaplier sheet metal, the Chevy Silverado boasts more fuel-saving features than the last iteration, starting with a diet that shed 450 pounds from the overall mass, including 88 pounds cut from the frame alone. One thing that's noticeable right away is that the huge rear doors on these new Crew Cab models will open to a ton of room in the back seat: Chevy confirmed rear-seat passengers will have 43.8-inches of legroom, up 3 inches over today's truck.
Powering the trucks will be a 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine, or an all-new 3-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine. Both V8s will use a new technology called Dynamic Fuel Management which can shut down any number of cylinders between one and seven. Each engine is paired to GM's new 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevy didn't mention any horsepower or torque figures but did hint that its diesel would not be overshadowed by any other light-duty diesel (like, say, Ford's new Power Stroke V6) in terms of output.
There's independent short/long front arm suspension, together a live axle auto suspension with composite second-stage springs on select models, a light-weighting approach borrowed from the Corvette.
Three different bed lengths will be available, all with more cargo volume. The bed offers a total of 63 cubic feet of volume. "Others feel a truck isn't a truck without a chrome bumper, but feel extra chrome can be too 'flashy.' Others want as much chrome as they can get". And to keep those heavy loads in place, there are now 12 tie downs. On an annual basis, Ford's F-Series sold almost 900,000 units in 2017, compared to about 586,000 units of the Chevy Silverado from GM.
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will be built at GM's Fort Wayne Assembly, with deliveries set to get underway in the fall.
