Israeli forces injure 40 Palestinians in West Bank

An Israeli military spokeswoman said "violent riots" involving rock-throwing youth erupted at two locations along the Gaza border, and some 50 Palestinians were involved.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said 43 Palestinians sustained injuries from live rounds and rubber-coated steel bullets, and 65 others underwent treatment for inhalation of tear gas.

In addition, six young Palestinians were wounded in clashes in the village of Allaban, southern Nablus, as a journalist was injured by a sound bomb in Al-Khali, or Hebron.

Relations between the Palestinians and Washington soured last month after Trump announced the United States would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage across the Arab world and concern among Washington's Western allies.

For decades, Israel has been in conflict with the Palestinians, who had been seeking diplomatic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which are partially occupied by Israel, and the Gaza Strip.

Today the clashes extended to a host of new Palestinian villages and towns.

Another 16-year-old, Omar Qadous, also died from a gunshot injury Friday during protests near the villages of Iraq Burin and Til. Palestinian landowners can receive financial compensation or alternative land, however this law authorizes a further massive land theft of private Palestinian land by the Israeli government.

Observers say tensions in Palestinian territories are likely to become aggravated, as US Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to visit Jerusalem from January 22nd.

"During the unrest [at the border with the Gaza Strip] servicemen selectively resorted to firearms against three main inciters, who posed a threat to soldiers and border facilities", the Armed Forces said.

Strict measures have been imposed on tens of thousands of Palestinians following the killing of an Israeli rabbi in a drive-by shooting in the West Bank this week.
