The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday announced that new passports will soon be printed without the usual last page of the document, which contains names of parents, and address of the applicant.
Muscat: The Indian government has chose to keep the last page of its citizens' passports blank, following recommendations made by a panel set up to look into, among other issues, requests by single mothers that the name of the father not be mentioned in their child's passport. The information will still be stored in the system of the external affairs ministry, so it will not affect the government. Reason behind specifying the address in last page is that this last page won't be there doesn't influence the passport office and the immigration department (or security organizations) since they have each of the details of the identification holder in the back-end. As a outcome, the document that shows citizenship will cease to be a valid proof of address photo copy of which is now taken for use at government and private offices. "One of the recommendations of the Committee was that the MEA should explore the possibility of doing away with the printing of information contained in the last page of the passport", the spokesperson added, as per ANI.
JD Vaishampayan at the regional passport office in Pune would only say that "some changes may happen soon". Currently, Indian passports are issued in three colours - white for government officers and those travelling on work allotted by the Centre, red for diplomats and blue for other citizens.
If the MEA decides to go ahead with this plan, these changes will be applicable the next series onwards, and the current passports will remain valid, reported HT.
The regular blue passports also have two categories - one where emigration checks are required and the other where they are not.
The Ministry also informed that the Indian Security Press (ISP), Nasik, would be designing the new passport booklets in due course.
Passport holders with ECR (Emigration Check Required) status would be issued a passport with orange passport jacket and those with non-ECR status would continue to get a blue passport, said the spokesperson.
So, while the passports will not show the names of the passport-holder's parents or spouse. As per Passport Act of India, all passports are valid until the date mentioned there.
