Government forces on Saturday defused an improvised explosive device (IED), weighing approximately five kilogrammes, on Srinagar-Baramulla highway, a police official said.

Two persons were injured after army opened fire in HMT area central Kashmir's Srinagar district on Saturday. After the IED was detected by the Road Opening Party, traffic was stopped on the highway and the IED defused.

Soon, they said, traffic movement on the highway was suspended and the entire area was sealed by the forces.

Reports said that Jammu and Kashmir Police, 2 RR of army and Bomb Disposal squad reached the spot and THE explosive was diffused. Officials said that timely detection averted a major tragedy.

IED claimed lives of four policemen in Sopore last week when it went off in a busy market. It was a gunny bag.

Asked whether any arrests have been made, he said, "One person was detained for questioning".
