About 9:48 p.m. Thursday night, January 11, Ceres officers were dispatched on a report of a woman shot inside a home, according to police.

28 year old Matthew Nicholson is now in custody after allegedly shooting, and killing, his mother over a broken gaming headset following a heated argument that led to he himself breaking it. His 68-year-old mother Lydia came up to check on him and an argument erupted.

According to the police report, he blamed his mother for the broken headset.

Officers tracked the vehicle to the relative's home and took Nicholson into custody.

He retrieved a handgun from the home and fired two rounds into an inside wall and then shot his mother in the head.

When the victim went to check on Nicholson, the pair began to argue.

He shot his mother in the head before his 81-year-old father Loren Nicholson wrestled the gun out of his hands, according to police. A family member told Fox 40, "I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun dammed. The father grabbed the gun, emptied it".

KCRA 3 News reports Lydia was active in the community and volunteered in local schools.

Matthew Nicholson was later pulled over during a traffic stop and arrested without incident.

Lydia Nicholson was transported to a hospital for treatment but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

"[She] had so much compassion for people and just wanted to see the best in people at all times", said Autumn Nicholson of her mother. "You've earned your wings, fly and be free".
