Almost 11,000 workers will lose their jobs as a result of the closings, which coincide with celebration over the new lower corporate tax rate, which led Ivanka Trump to tweet that "America is on a roll", and prompted Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin ro thank Walmart from the White House briefing room.
Garcia said the company doesn't know yet where all those centers will be.
The letter from Steve Orloski, Sam's Club market manager, was sent to Armstead and James Manning, of the New Jersey Department and Workforce Development.
Sam's Club is closing stores.
Walmart and Sam's Club now operate more than 5,400 locations across the U.S. After the reduction, there will be 597 Sam's Club stores.
Some of the Sam's Club locations, a division of the Arkansas-based retailer, will be converted to eCommerce fulfillment centers to speed up online orders. Some demanded refunds for their Sam's Club memberships, which cost between $45 and $100.
The stores were closed Thursday and plan to open again Friday with hours from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. until they close permanently, Buckner said. Some said that employees were bewildered when they showed up for work and found out they did not have a job any longer.
Walmart now has two ECommerce hubs in the US - in Fort Worth, Texas, and Swedesboro, N.J. - supporting all of its online sales, according to Hatfield.
Though numerous employees at the New Caney location were fairly new as the store opened just a year ago, Hatfield said some employees may still qualify for Walmart's new bonus system, which is based on length of service.
The company will look at opportunities to transfer Sam's Club employees to Walmart locations in Alaska, Garcia said.
Earlier in the day, Walmart had cited the sweeping Republican tax overhaul that will save it money in announcing the higher hourly wages, one-time bonuses and expanded parental benefits that will affect more than a million hourly workers in the U.S.
"Right now that's what the customer wants", she said.
