Pantone announces a new colour of the year every December, based on trend-forecasting research from the Pantone Color Institute.
And now it's Pantone's Color of the Year for 2018.
"The selection of Ultra Violet speaks to our shared desire for deeper understanding in an increasingly complex landscape, and our eagerness to experiment to reach that level", said the company.
Pantone describes it as "an enigmatic purple shade that evokes the inventive spirit and imaginative thinking that challenges the status quo". Annually (since 2000), the institute's team of color experts traipses the globe identifying trends and color cues before zeroing in that one flawless hue that matches the mood du jour. "We wanted to pick something that brings hope and an uplifting message", Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explained to The New York Times.
Pantone notes that the Ultra Violet color has often been used to represent nonconformity and artistic brilliance.
Pantone tries each year to choose a color that reflects current design trends and cultural leanings. Last year's top hue was Greenery and in 2016, Pantone picked two hues, Rose Quartz and Serenity. You're guaranteed to see this color popping up in home design and interiors.
If you're looking to use this in your home, Hellander suggests Behr's King's Court as a paint match to Pantone's Ultra Violet.
