Los Angeles fire chief: 'Our people are getting tired'

Evacuations ordered in Bel Air as wildfire burns near the 405 freeway

Homes Burning in Bel-Air; 405 Freeway Closed Near Skirball Center

More than 150,000 people in Los Angeles were ordered to evacuate in areas affected by the Creek Fire, Rye Fire and Skirball Fire.

A few factors have contributed to the fires spreading so quickly, the biggest of which grew to almost 80-square-miles in just a few hours.

#SkirballFire UPDATE: The 405 Fwy is now CLOSED in both directions between the 101 Fwy and 10 Fwy as the 50-acre brush fire near the Getty Center continues to rage. There have been mandatory evacuations in some parts of LA - Moraga Drive, Linda Flora Drive, and Casiano Road down to Bellagio Road.

Estimated at 50 acres and fueled by 25 miles per hour winds, the blaze was expected to grow, Los Angeles authorities told the newspaper.

Residents are being asked to evacuate the area south of Mulholland, east of the 405, north of Sunset and west of Roscomare.

"If a circuit is turned off, then it will not be re-energized until wind speeds have been reduced and the circuit has been assessed, which may include a physical inspection", the statement said.

The fire was burning in the same general area as the devastating Bel-Air Fire of 1961.

"We're in the middle of a weeklong red flag condition". One of many dramatic videos uploaded by commuters passing the fire in the early morning hours ominously captures the highway exit sign for Getty Center Drive against a backdrop of a hillside blanketed in flames. The southbound lanes of the 405 freeway were reopened about 9 a.m., but the northbound lanes remained closed.

The groups' concerns have been aimed primarily at the Los Angeles Police Department, which has also been authorized by the Police Commission to begin a pilot program for using drones in select tactical situations.

The University of California, Los Angeles announced that classes would be cancelled on Thursday due to the campus' proximity to the fire.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District closed all of its schools Wednesday and Thursday.

Hundreds of firefighters, six fixed-wing aircraft and a number of helicopters were deployed quickly to the fire, a departure from the firefights in Sylmar, Santa Clarita and Ventura, where gusty Santa Ana winds kept crews on the ground.
