South Korea's Unification Ministry have called for North Korea to participate at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics in an effort to foster peace.
Olympics, a division of the NBC Sports Group, has selected Leyard to provide fine pitch LED video walls for its production of the 2018 Winter Olympics, which will take place in PyeongChang, South Korea, from February 9-25, 2018.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach told the 193-member world body that with the resolution the General Assembly is "creating the conditions for all athletes to compete in peace". "It says that, no matter what is going on in state capitals around the world, people will always have a space in which to engage and connect".
The Organizing Committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games opened a Web site, hellopyeongchang.com, on Tuesday to better promote the games.
This resolution called on countries "to ensure the safe passage, access and participation of athletes, officials and all other accredited persons" taking part in the upcoming Winter Games. Speaking in support of the truce's adoption was former South Korean figure skater and gold medalist Kim Yu-na.
In a speech before the assembly, Kim Yu-na, a former South Korean figure skating champion and honorary ambassador to the PyeongChang games, touted the Olympic spirit. "The Olympic Games demonstrate that our values of a shared humanity are stronger than all the forces that want to divide us".
South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yo has assured this year's Olympics will be a success.
"Today, I hope to witness this power again", she continued. "Pyeonchang represents perhaps the most honest effort to cross frozen borders between North and South Korea and foster a peaceful environment", Kim added.
The resolution noted "possibilities of new partnership in sport and beyond for Republic of Korea, Japan and China".
PyeongChang 2018 marks the first of three consecutive Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Asia, and will be followed by Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022.
The resolution, also known as the "Olympic Truce", is adopted every two years ahead of the Summer and Winter Olympic games to declare a truce and safe passage for all participants during the athletic events.
South Korean gold medalist Kim Yu-na, an honorary ambassador for the Pyeongchang Olympics, speaks to the UN General Assembly in support of the Olympic Truce resolution on November 13.
While in the USA, the minister will be engaged in a slew of promotional activities for the Olympics.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday in a statement "welcomed" the United Nations resolution and added that "the expression of the expectation that it will help promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia reflects the Korean government's commitment to make the PyeongChang event an 'Olympic of Peace'".
Lee said that PyeongChang is ready to "welcome the world" for the 2018 Olympics with all construction done and the Olympic Flame touring the country. "North Korea responded with extreme sensitivity to the Seoul Olympics in 1988, which it regarded as an indicator of rivalry between the two governments".
