The shootings, according to authorities, began as a domestic violence incident, before the shooter started picking random targets, including a woman and a child in a truck, and later, students at a nearby elementary.
"It was all over in about 45 minutes", Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said. More than 100 law enforcement officials were there dealing with five crime scenes.
Authorities in California say three people have been killed and multiple children have been injured in a number of shootings in California. "I know that the school's been cleared".
All other student were transported to a safe location following the shooting.
He said one child was shot and wounded at the school. Another was struck by a bullet, while in a auto with a woman, according to Johnston.
Police from Red Bluff, investigators from the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tehama County District Attorney's Office, and California Highway Patrol officers are assisting across the "widespread scene", Johnston said.
Johnston said the gunman, who has not been identified, went on his shooting spree after stealing a neighbor's vehicle and then tried to gain access to the school but was unsuccessful as it was on lockdown.
Flint described living next to the gunman as "hell".
"The insane thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", the unnamed witness told KCRA. "We made it (known) that this guy is insane and he's been threatening us and everything like that".
It's unclear who Flint had informed of the suspect's earlier actions. Students also were shot and wounded at an elementary school. They heard the shooting from about a quarter-mile away and immediately corralled all of the students inside and locked down the facility.
