Chennai ODI: Dhoni, Pandya help India set 282-run target for Aussies

Watch the first ODI between India and Australia live on Sky Sports Cricket from 8.50am on Sunday.

Pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile made a stunning comeback to 50-over cricket by claiming opener Ajinkya Rahane (5), and skipper Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey (both for noughts) for the scorecard to read 11/3.

The catch might well lead to some banter between the two at a later stage, as the two are known to be friends off the field.

Kohli has recovered his form and India returned from an emphatic tour of Sri Lanka, where it beat the hosts across all three formats. Veteran MS Dhoni will aim to consolidate the innings with his experience along with Hardik Pandya.

The duo added 118 runs for the sixth wicket with Pandya taking the attack back to the opposition with some brilliant sixes while Dhoni once again played the role of sheet anchor to perfection.

Two balls later, Coulter-Nile had his third when Pandey also edged behind to Matthew Wade.

India have officially started looking at and building for the World Cup in England in 2019.

The surface at the MA Chidambaram Stadium tends to get progressively worse for batting.

Dhoni, who took 67 balls to score his first boundary, accelerated towards the end and raised 72 runs with Bhuvneshwar Kumar who scored 32 not out.

The Mumbai batsman didn't look very convincing in his brief stay.

For India, Ajinkya Rahane is expected to partner up with Sharma, as first-choice partner Shikhar Dhawan was released from the ODI squad due to his wife's illness. The bounce and carry off the deck brought an immediate smile on the bowler's face and every time both Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile bent their backs, the ball zoomed past the shoulder of the bat. KL Rahul is also an option. They clean swept Sri Lanka 9-0 across all three formats in what was a completely one-sided affair.

With a calf problem ruling Aaron Finch out of the first few ODIs, Travis Head might be forced to open the batting, a position he is accustomed to, having opened for South Australia.

The turning point of the innings was the 37th over bowled by Zampa (1/66 in 10 overs) when Pandya launched into him.

The Australian players Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are ruled out in this series as they are injured and Aaron Finch will not be the opener along with Warner and he is replaced by Peter Handscomb but Travis Head is expected to be the novice with Warner.

India can also present 2 wrist spinners, as Axar Patel has already donated the first three ODIs from side to side a left ankle sprain can affect the match.
