FC's Paul Mariner laments Newcastle's two first-half injuries, but places much of the blame on red-carded Jonjo Shelvey.

They name Michal Pazdan as a player who is also interesting Newcastle United.

Newcastle hope to complete their move for Stoke striker Joselu on Tuesday after making significant progress.

"Stephen Ireland told me because he played here that Newcastle's supporters are very nice and the stadium was incredible", he said.

"I've played on the Playstation with the club and I'm very excited to be here".

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is edging closer to a deal for Stoke striker Joselu.

Former Spain Under-21 worldwide Joselu is keen to kick-start his Premier League career after being farmed out by Stoke on loan last season to Deportivo la Coruna.

Polish defender Pazdan, 29, is now on the books of Legia Warsaw, with Benitez intrigued by potential in the Premier League.

Having come through the ranks at Celta Vigo, Joselu joined Real Madrid in 2009, before moving to the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover 96, from which he joined Stoke in June 2015 for £5.75m.

Last season's top scorer Dwight Gayle was operating as a lone frontman with only Aleksandar Mitrovic as back-up on the bench.

"Obviously he has experience of English football and the Premier League". We think if we can exploit his full potential he will be a good signing for us.

"He knows and accepts the challenge we've given him at Newcastle and he's keen to come and fight for a position in the team".

The 27-year-old is set to become Newcastle's sixth capture since the end of last season after passing a medical and agreeing terms on a £50,000-a-week move to the North-East.
