Gunman who targeted Republicans acted alone

Hodgkinson did not make any specific threats against members of Congress on his social media accounts, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Watson said he learned of Hodgkinson's connection to the Virginia shooting shortly after 9:30 a.m., when he arrived at the department for a meeting.

The investigation lends a rough timeline of movements and activities of the gunman, James "Tom" Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, before the shooting happened.

Adrift and struggling to cope with an array of personal problems, James Hodgkinson was running out of money and told a family member that he wanted to return to IL. Bernie Sanders' office as a tourist.

For most of that window in April, Congress was not in session. The gunman did not meet with the senator, a Sanders spokesman told the Washington Post on Wednesday.

Hodgkinson displayed a photo of the Vermont Independent on his Facebook page. Hodgkinson never said anything during the shooting or after, before he died.

A review of the gunman's internet searches showed the man only did a cursory search of two people on the list, said Slater, who did not denote which two lawmakers.

Slater said Hodgkinson legally purchased both the guns he used in the attack - the handgun in March 2003 and the rifle in November 2016, after the presidential election.

Slater said Hodgkinson acted alone and was known to have an "anger management problem".

"I think he was struggling in a lot of aspects of his life", Slater said. Through witness accounts, Hodgkinson was reported to frequent the local libraries in Alexandria where he could obtain free Wi-Fi; however, he was unable to use the Alexandria Library computers as he was a non-resident and therefore not eligible for a local library card.

"I told him they were Republicans". Last Wednesday, he went to the unit at 6:23am and left it at 6:35am. The unit contained a laptop, more than 200 rounds of ammunition, the receipt for his 2016 rifle purchase, and other rifle components.

Slater said the list of lawmakers, which included Reps.

The injured congressman, Republican Steve Scalise of Louisiana, remains hospitalized in fair condition.

Agents also announced some of the names on the shooter's list that he carried with him, one of which was U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC.

The gunman turned out to be an unemployed home inspector with a deep animus toward President Donald Trump and other Republicans. All five people who were shot survived their injuries.

Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March and drove to the Alexandria area, where he then lived in his vehicle at a YMCA across the street from the baseball field. He had become somewhat of a fixture at the YMCA, carrying a laptop and a gym bag. Slater declined to name the officials whose names were on the note or say whether they were Republicans or Democrats or were at the baseball practice. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy.
