Norman native and Oklahoma Sooner, Brad Dalke is participating in his first U.S. Open as an amateur. Jason Day also tangled with fierce fescue and had two triple bogeys in his round of 79.
Day thought his game was perfectly suited for Erin Hills. Reavie had five birdies in a six-hole stretch beginning on No. 11.
The U.S. Open, which is one of four major tournaments in professional golf, is Thursday through Sunday. All seven of his birdies came from inside 15 feet.
The Englishman rallied with a string of five birdies in a row on the way to a one-under 71 that put the smile back on his face and his name on top of the leaderboard at Erin Hills.
A fellow named Xander Schauffele, who ranks 352nd in the world, and a Texas A&M bomber who goes by the catchy Cameron Champ are a combined 10-under par heading into the weekend. The record for a lowest cut was 1-over 145 at Medinah in 1990.
Dustin Johnson was right on the cut line with eight holes to play.
"Definitely not U.S. Open-like", Marc Leishman said.
Willett shot a 9-over 81 in the first round and then withdrew before his tee time in the second round.
At times, it felt like a regular PGA Tour event.
It sounds as if Erin Hills is becoming more challenging with each passing minute.
Playing good golf hasn't been as easy as it was at Hazeltine.
"I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did", Johnson said. "Hopefully I've got a lot of the bad stuff out of my system yesterday and some parts today".
"They got a kick out of it", he said.
Numerous pundits expected Rory McIlroy to have an excellent tournament and contend for the title at Erin Hills because he had seemingly recovered from a recurring rib injury that had kept him out of action for the previous five weeks.
But the second-ranked player in the world still has a lot of ground to make up at Erin Hills. McIlroy was only one shot better.
McIlroy has birdied three of his last four holes. Johnson's round included a double-bogey and two bogeys, all of which happened over the course of four holes.
The opening round was without Phil Mickelson for the first time since 1993. This one he'd rather forget. His drive appeared to sail into the rough. I was just trying to show what we have in some spots.
The 23-year-old from San Diego had been having an excellent debut at the Open. If I don't three-putt, I shoot even. Fowler tees off in the afternoon.
But Casey rebounded with five straight birdies at Nos.
Happy with his putting, the retooled Hadwin said before the championship that this year has seen an improvement in his tee-to-green game. He almost made a hole-in-one at the par-3 13th. He tapped in for par.
Fowler tees off his second round in the afternoon. On typical U.S. Open greens, that would have run all the way off the back of the green.
"Guess what?" he said to his 4-year-old son.
Schauffele had a chance to tie Fowler for the lead until his 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 ninth slid by on the right.
McIlroy will join Day at the US PGA Tour's Travelers Championship in CT next week.
Paul Casey is the latest example of how little it takes to record a big number in the U.S. Open. He made sure the third chip went well past the flag, but triple-bogey 7 was the best he could do.
"I was upset with the score I had made, but it did not have any effect on my attitude or how I was going to then approach the rest of the round or the next shot".
Day at least managed to find one positive spin. Spieth and Fowler, who opened with a 7-under 65, were among the next handful of players behind Johnson in the odds.
Despite their respective struggles, neither Johnson, McIlroy or Day took issue with the course, instead taking ownership of the problems that cut their weekend short. 1, 2 and 3 all missed the cut in a major.
