Congressman's condition 'more difficult' than first thought

"If we don't play this baseball game and we go home, then they win", said Rep. Roger Williams, (R) Texas.

Two weapons - a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 caliber rifle - were recovered from the scene and traced by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition this morning.

The alleged gunman - 66-year-old James Hodgkinson - was killed. Hodgkinson had arrests in his background but showed required firearms licenses to an IL deputy who confronted him about shooting a cornfield last spring.

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise has been undergoing a third surgery after he and others were shot at a baseball practice by a man hostile to the GOP. Scalise remained in critical condition at a local hospital, his family by his side, grievously wounded by a bullet that entered at the hip and injured internal organs.

It was unclear whether he had emerged from surgery as of mid-day Thursday. She noted that she has received numerous threats herself over the years, and is now the target of millions of dollars in negative ads in a House district in Georgia where a hard-fought special election will take place next week. Also wounded was former congressional aide Matt Mika, who now works for Tyson Foods in its Washington office.

"We are grateful for the care he has received, from the first responders in the field to the world-class care here at the hospital", the family said in a statement.

Authorities believe he'd been in the D.C. area a few months. And he says Scalise is "in some trouble".

Trump says Scalise "continues his very courageous fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

Following a day that saw most congressional business canceled, the House approved legislation offering health insurance tax credits to some veterans while committees pondered federal land management, cybersecurity and more.

"Steve in his own way may have brought some unity to our long-divided country", Trump added. "They saved a lot of lives", Trump said.

The GOP lawmakers' team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted.

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., issued a call to "replace the hateful rhetoric and resistance with respect".

House Republicans met privately earlier to discuss the shootings, pray and sign oversized cards for the wounded.

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

After the hospital visit, Pence headed to Miami for a conference on Central America and meetings with the leaders of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. "We love you." Lewis led a House floor Democratic sit-in previous year when Republicans refused to consider gun control legislation. The popular annual face-off, which raises money for charity, is scheduled to go forward as planned Thursday evening at the Nationals stadium across the Potomac from where the shooting took place.

As they prepared for a bipartisan baseball game Thursday night that promised at least a brief lull in the political mud fight, some said they hoped the good feeling would last past the final inning.

Trump also praised Scalise's protective detail: the Capitol Police assigned to safeguard senior lawmakers. The assailant had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP - and was shot by police and later died.

Scalise was fielding balls at second base when he was shot, according to lawmakers present.
