At about 5 P.M. on Friday, Laredo police spotted a vehicle that matched the description of Rodriguez's auto outside a convenience store. The officers approached and the man opened fire, police said.

Laredo police investigators survey the scene of a fatal shootout between a homicide suspect and LPD officers outside a Valero gas station Friday, June 2, 2017, in Laredo, Texas. But when officers spot Rodriguez's vehicle, the suspect allegedly opened fire on police.

The suspect, Antonio Gerardo Rodriguez, is seen here.

When officers arrived at Rodriguez's apartment, they found a lifeless woman in the bedroom with a gunshot wound above her chest.

Baeza says Rodriguez died at Doctors Hospital of Laredo. One officer was airlifted 150 miles to the University Hospital in San Antonio, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Baeza also noted that a fourth officer was injured by flying glass during the shootout.

In a press release sent Saturday, Laredo police said they received a call from a restaurant employee shortly after 11 a.m. Friday, saying that her co-worker's boyfriend called the restaurant.

'We ask the community for prayers for the officers and their families, ' Baeza said, according to the Morning Times. Two officers underwent surgical procedures and "have good outlooks toward their condition".

Laredo is a city of over 235,000 people located on the border with Mexico.
